Youth marches for climate action draw millions around the world

September 20, 2019

In cities across the globe on Friday, protesters took to the streets to demand action on climate change. The demonstrations, easily the largest to focus on climate, represent a movement driven largely by young people -- many of whom left school to join the walkout. William Brangham spoke to several participants about their mission to reduce fossil fuel emissions and how they plan to execute it.

New York’s Original Teen-Age Climate Striker Welcomes a Global Movement

On Friday morning, Alexandria Villaseñor, who, at fourteen years old, is one of the youngest organizers of the global climate strike, took the subway from Grand Central to Foley Square, in downtown Manhattan. This would be her forty-first week in a row of climate-striking. Inspired by Greta Thunberg, who had first skipped school to strike outside the Swedish Parliament, in August, 2018, Villaseñor had been demonstrating every Friday outside the United Nations since December 14th.

More than 1,200 people rallied at the California state capitol building Friday calling for lawmakers to act on climate change, as part of a global day to bring attention to the issue. The rally was a part of the “Global Climate Strike,” which brought out millions of students world-wide for the issue.
