What you need to know about #climatestrikesummer →
  • For 8 Fridays this summer, from June 28th to August 16th, Earth Uprising is inviting all climate organizations and #FridaysforFuture movement strikers, to target their Friday strikes towards 8 different sectors of society.
  • We are encouraging strikers to relocate, or theme, their Friday strikes to bring awareness to the areas of society requiring deep transformation to address the climate crisis prior to the United Nations Climate Summit in September 2019.
  • Each week Earth Uprising, and all the participants of #ClimateStrikeSummer, will be calling on the press, journalists, scholars, authors, researchers, politicians and many others, to comment and write about the issue of the week – with the greatest focus on a call for solutions.
  • Your group can organize and participate in only one week of the #ClimateStrikeSummer campaign, or all weeks of the #ClimateStrikeSummer campaign!

How we support

Materials and amplification →

In support of these strikes, Earth Uprising is:

  • Publishing a national map for each strike week on our website
  • Creating a weekly national press release covering the campaign and strikes
  • Providing a resource guide for each weeks theme, containing relevant research and communication strategies

  • Utilizing our coalition of youth and adult orgs, now in all 50 states in the U.S., to mobilize support, increase attendance and amplify these weekly strikes

Date: Friday, June 28th

What:

This week’s strikes call on the news media to effectively cover the climate crisis. In April of this year, journalists Mark Hertsgaard and Kyle Pope wrote “The media are complacent while the world burns”. Journalists are now leading a campaign to #CoverClimateNow, therefore, Fridays for Future is joining the call to action, and will use this strike to demand more climate crisis coverage from the news media.

Week 2

Industry & Corporations

Date: Friday, July 5th

What:

This week’s strikes bring awareness to the damage industries such as fast fashion, transportation and meat are doing to the climate system. During this week we are calling on corporate leaders to step up and address the climate crisis with their actions. Currently, the media focuses primarily on the damage corporations can expect to their bottom line because of the climate crisis. We assert that this perspective is incorrect. We must focus on the damage corporations are doing to the climate system and planet.

Week 3

Systems of Oppression

ZERO HOUR Strike

Date: Friday, July 12th

What:

This week’s strikes will call out the systems of oppression that enabled the climate crisis. The weekend of this strike, the ZERO HOUR MOVEMENT will convene their International Youth Climate Summit in Miami, Florida. This historic summit is also intended to create awareness of the local effects of the climate crisis, and the deeply rooted structural systems in society that have caused it. Miami, FL was chosen as the host because it is ground zero and will see some of the greatest effects of climate change in the USA, and in the shortest amount of time!

Week 4

Plastic Pollution

Date: Friday, July 19th

What:

This week’s strikes bring awareness to the impact plastic manufacturing and pollution has on the climate system. A study recently published demonstrates how plastics contribute to the climate crisis. This year, plastic manufacturing and incineration will create more than 850 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions! Plastics now make up more than 60% of ocean debris and a startling new study showed how micro plastics are saturating deep ocean environments. To address the climate crisis, we must address the plastic crisis!

Week 5

Education Crisis

Date: Friday, July 26th

What:

This week’s strikes demand our educational systems and structures provide critical climate education and divest from the fossil fuel industry. Students are demanding more climate justice education in their schools, yet many lawmakers continue to push back on allowing climate education in classrooms. Furthermore, many colleges and universities continue to make investments in fossil fuels, thereby contributing to the worsening effects of climate change. Education is the key to acting on the climate crisis.

Week 6

Politicians

Date: Friday, August 2nd

What:

This week’s strikes will target the politicians who either deny climate change, or have made the decision to not support swift and expansive climate action. In the U.S., also the 2nd largest polluter of CO2 in the world, the federal administration denies climate science and anthropogenic climate change. Our politicians need to know we won’t allow them to ignore the climate crisis any longer. We are demanding polticians have a comprehensive climate action plan that incorporates equity and protections for those affected the most by the climate crisis.

Week 7

Banks & the Financial Industry

Date: Friday, August 9th

What:

This week’s strikes bring awareness to the banks and financial companies that are funding the fossil fuel companies and the climate crisis. Recently, protestors from 12 European countries gathered to demand European Investment Bank (EIB) end its financial support of fossil fuel projects. These actions put pressure on financial institutions to choose to protect our planet instead of their shareholders. Furthermore, through our #FinanceClimateStrike this week, we will also call attention to wealth inequality and the devastating effects this has on our climate.

Week 8

Fossil Fuel Industry

Date: Friday, August 16th

What:

This final week’s strikes will demand a rapid transition to 100% renewable energy and a commitment from all our world governments to keep fossil fuels in the ground. For our civilization to continue, scientists have warned us that we must reduce global greenhouse gas emission by 50% by 2030, and by 100% by 2050 per the October 2018 IPCC Special Report.

Some studies are now concluding the IPCC report overestimated the timeframe required to decarbonize our planet, and that we actually must reduce emissions sooner in order to guard against the worst effects of global warming.
